Vnukovo International School aims to provide high standard internationally recognized education and develop intellectual, creative and physical potential of each child in a unique environment that will allow its graduates to reach academic, creative and athletic goals and become active, internationally-minded, life-long learners with the aim of changing the world for the better.
An integral feature of the socially responsible personality is honesty, including academic one. “Honesty is the best policy” (proverb). The development of academic honesty is a necessary component of the educational process in the School. The academic honesty policy is the same for all participants of the educational process: pupils, teachers, and parents. It is a set of values and behaviours informed by the attributes of the IB learner profile and VIS Learner Profile. The academic honesty policy in the school is the formation of all the qualities of the student and in particular such as:
- Principled (because honesty is a principle)
- Knowledgeable (because for the observance of the principle of academic honesty you must possess certain knowledge and skills)
- Thinkable (because it is not only important to know what academic honesty is and what it needs, but also to understand why it is important and is a value)
- Reflective (because it is important to evaluate your successes and failures, their causes and consequences for further development)
1. General provisions
- The present Academic Honesty Policy of OANO «Vnukovo International School» (hereinafter referred to as the Policy) defines a set of measures to promote the degree of openness of knowledge, understanding the importance of reflection and analysis of the information received, assessing the degree of transparency of knowledge, and also explains the basic principles and rules of academic integrity required for compliance with students in OANO "Vnukovo International School" and is developed in accordance with:
- Federal Law of 29.12.2012. No 273-FZ «On education in the Russian Federation»;
- Regulative documents developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization:
- «Academic honesty in the IB educational context»
- “Academic Integrity”
- “Academic Honesty”
- Charter of OANO «Vnukovo International School».
- The Policy is developed in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the International Baccalaureate, the mission of Vnukovo International School (VIS), IB Learner Profile and VIS Learner Profile.
- «Academic Honesty Policy» is a working document, which is subject to revision every two years. Amendments and changes can be made.
- The Policy is mandatory for learners, teachers and all other employees of the School.
- The School guarantees access to all students, parents and teachers to the most complete and latest version of the Academic Honesty Policy.
2. Principles of academic integrity
In practice, academic honesty means that any member of the school considers unacceptable:
Plagiarism
- Intentional use of someone else's work or fragments of someone else's work without indicating the author, under your own name, including the substitution of abstracting while working with sources using the practice of “copy-paste” without referencing.
- Deliberate use of other people's ideas for their own without mentioning the author.
- The lack of reference to the source (text, illustrations, photographs) in the form of footnotes, inline references, bibliography, notations of quotes in accordance with the rules.
Misconduct
- Taking unauthorized material (cheat sheets, and other records of various types, and printed sources; phones, tablets, computers and other electronic devices) into an examination room, and/or support in any way access to them, disruptive behavior and communicating with others during the examination.
Collusion
- Cheating with classroom/homework and handing it in as your own, as well as permission to write off classroom/homework.
- Doing classroom/homework for a different student; subsequent handing in of the classroom/homework done by a different student but claiming it to be done yourself.
- Transmission of information about specific tasks, exam/test papers in any way without the permission of the teacher.
- Different forms of collaborative deception, collaborative misleading of someone in collusion.
Falsification
- Making up and fraud of data (experiment; survey; progress report; lists of sources of information that in fact were not involved).
- Various forms of document fraud (false medical certificates, forgery of notes from parents, entries, etc.).
Duplication of work
- Presentation of the same work for different assessment components and/or Diploma Programme requirements.
Disclosing information
- Informing another candidate, or receiving information from another candidate, about the content of an examination paper within 24 hours after the examination.
Other options as forms of dishonesty
- Help from other people outside of school (parents, relatives, friends, acquaintances) without specifying their contribution to the work.
- Using sources which provide ready-made sample tasks and answer keys.
- The substitution of individual work on an assignment that was given for self-fulfillment by teamwork.
- The intentional avoidance of work and responsibility for the outcome in cases of group work/group assignments.
- Failure to comply with the agreements and deadlines with the purpose of obtaining any benefits.
- Intentionally skipping classes on days of internal assessment without a valid reason.
Consequences of violation of the principle of academic honesty and responsibility:
- Any assignment (work) made in violation of the principle of academic honesty will not be accepted, therefore cannot be assessed. A new assignment needs to be submitted.
- An episode of academic dishonesty is being made public within the School community.
- Parents are informed of the case of academic dishonesty (verbally, via electronic register or by e-mail).
- Repeated violations of the principles of academic honesty will lead to penalties within the Houses system of awarding points and may result in the removal of points.
- Any violations of the principles of academic honesty in the Diploma Programme will be dealt with in accordance with IB regulations defined in the official IBO documents: “Academic Integrity”, “Diploma Programme Assessment Procedures”, “General Regulations: Diploma Programme”. The School ensures that students and their legal representatives will be familiarized with the relevant sections of the above documents.
What is expected of a teacher:
- Acceptance of academic honesty and adherence to the principle in their own work.
- Participation in school-wide collaborative work to develop and implement a policy of academic integrity.
- Daily personal contribution to the formation and development of academic integrity in pupils through:
- Use of all possible and acceptable means to develop the students' academic integrity as a value-setting and create an environment in which academic integrity cannot be violated (to set its own example, express its own attitude, share its own understanding, initiate and support discussions).
- Planning and implementation of work to develop the necessary skills of pupils in order to comply with the principle of academic honesty (search and analysis of sources, referrals, thesis, documentation of sources of information, design of links, etc.).
- Planning a manageable workload so students can allocate time effectively to produce necessary work.
- Use of academic integrity concepts regularly and explained as often as necessary, including before assignment/work.
- Ensuring students are clearly informed of the assignment/work requirements for academic integrity.
- Warning students of the consequences of violating the principle of academic honesty.
- Eliminating or minimizing opportunities for academic dishonesty, preventing and addressing cases of academic dishonesty.
- Willingness to spend time and effort to identify cases of academic dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism testing of texts). The School determines TURNITIN as one of the possible software to cope with the task.
- Consistency – inability to accept/record work done in violation of the principles of academic honesty.
- Informing students and parents and the DP coordinator about each case of academic dishonesty.
What is expected of a student:
- Understanding the importance and commitment to the principles of academic honesty.
- Broadcasting and promoting the principles of academic honesty among other students in the School.
- Completing all tasks, tests, examinations honestly and with maximum use of their own strength, knowledge, skills.
- Acknowledgement of all sources used in all works submitted for evaluation in written and oral material and/or creative products.
- Refraining from receiving prohibited assistance in completing or editing a work, for example, from friends, relatives, other students, private teachers, organizations providing essay or copying services, using file-sharing sites.
- Refraining from unduly assisting classmates to complete their work.
- Responsible use of the Internet and related social media platforms.
What is expected of parents and legal representatives of students:
- Awareness of the Academic Honesty Policy.
- Support for the school’s philosophy of academic integrity.
- Understanding of the policies, procedures and subject-oriented recommendations in the course or examination work of their children.
- Supporting the understanding of the policy of academic honesty among their children.
- Understanding the school’s internal policies and procedures to ensure the authenticity of their children’s work.
- Supporting their children in planning their workloads so that they can efficiently allocate their time.
- Understanding what constitutes a student’s academic misconduct and its consequences.
- Providing only genuine and/or credible evidence in support of a request for inclusive access or consideration of disadvantages for their children.
- Refraining from providing or receiving assistance in completing the work of their children.
The final version of Academic Honesty Policy was approved by the Pedagogical Council of the School in December, 2020.
